URJC celebrates 20 years of LATEP with a Conference on Circular Economy in Plastics

On May 28th, Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Laboratory of Polymer Technology and Materials (LATEP).

The event, titled "Circular Economy in Plastics: Present and Future Challenges," saw over 100 attendees, including leading speakers and experts. Organized by LATEP and sponsored by Repsol, the conference focused on key topics in circular economy research, particularly the handling of polymer waste, which comprises 50% of plastic waste.

Discussions addressed issues like fishing net waste treatment, plastic circularity, and vehicle plastic management. Esteemed participants included the director-general of Plastics Europe Spain, researchers from LATEP and IMDEA Energía, and representatives from companies and associations such as REPSOL, ECOEMBES, AIMPLAS, and ANAIP. Established two decades ago, LATEP has collaborated with numerous global companies, conducting over 130,000 tests and generating more than 8 million euros in revenue for URJC. This makes it a key player in plastic materials research both locally and internationally.

The URJC Rector highlighted the significance of LATEP and its university-industry collaboration model, emphasizing its societal impact.
