This week, Shanghai hosts the 9th International Conference on Polyolefin Characterisation (ICPC2025), where Carlos Domínguez, director of the Polymer Technology Laboratory (LATEP) at Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), has been invited as a speaker in the session on Sustainability and Circularity of Polymers.
During the conference, Dr. Domínguez will present his paper: From fishing nets to car bumpers: New opportunities for boosting the circular economy in polyolefins. His talk will review various examples of recycling stream treatment and viability analysis that LATEP has been developing and publishing for more than a decade, highlighting the laboratory’s long-standing commitment to promoting plastic recycling. Examples include the transformation of discarded fishing nets into cosmetic containers, the feasibility of recycling milk bottles, and innovative approaches to recycling plastics in the automotive sector. These initiatives—carried out in collaboration with the IMDEA Energy Institute and as part of projects such as CIRPLACAR, which recently won second place at the SIGRAUTO Innovation Awards for Recovery—will be featured in his presentation in China.
According to Dr. Domínguez, “This invitation is a recognition of more than ten years of research at LATEP, where we firmly believe that the circular economy and plastic recyclability must remain a priority for our laboratory.”
Around the same time last year, LATEP was also present in China, signing an important collaboration agreement between URJC and the Chinese plastics processing industry.
As Rafael García, senior researcher at LATEP, notes, “The significance of LATEP’s work is reflected in the large number of national and international collaborations—with more than 70 public and private organizations—and in the scientific impact of our publications.”
